Mohun Bagan and Churchill Brothers renew rivalry at Bhubaneswar

Sunday will witness two back-to-back encounters in the Hero Super Cup, with the second one  pitching two Hero I-League clubs - Churchill Brothers and Mohun Bagan against each other at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar. The two clubs have met before a number of times and share a rich history, but this is the first time they will face-off in a completely new knock-out tournament. Ahead of the fixture, we take a look at how the teams are placed for the match.

Churchill Brothers

Once a force to be reckoned with in the domestic scene, Churchill have fallen down the ladder in the past couple of seasons. They finished ninth in Hero I-League 2017-18, which will see them being relegated to the Second Division next season. However, they didn’t let the unpleasant turn of events bog them down as they edged past Delhi Dynamos FC in the qualifiers to set up a clash with Mohun Bagan. Nonetheless, they need to get over their inhibitions if they want to dominate the opponents who have defeated them twice in the league.

In defence, Osagie Monday’s contribution will be crucial in thwarting Bagan’s advances coupled with custodian Ricardo Cardozo’s safe hands. The midfield is injected with young blood and has the likes of Nicholas Fernandes and Dawda Ceesay, while the attack will be spearheaded by the experienced Trinidadian Willis Deon Plaza, whose brace in the qualifiers secured Churchill’s place in the pre-quarter finals.

Mohun Bagan

One of the most decorated clubs in the domestic circuit, the Kolkata giants missed out on winning the Hero I-League in the very last day in two consecutive seasons. They finished third in the table, four points behind eventual champions Minerva Punjab FC, but the desire to lay hands on silverware at the end of the season will be at an all-time high. Churchill have not been at their best in recent years and after defeating them in both the fixtures this season, Bagan will be brimming with confidence.

Custodian Shilton Paul heads the defence besides the likes of veteran Kingshuk Debnath and Kingsley Obumneme. Their combination has resulted in Bagan conceding just 14 times over the course of the season. The midfield includes players like Cameron Watson, Yuta Kinowaki and Nikhil Kadam who have had a good season, while the frontline is headed by the league’s top goalscorer Dipanda Dicka, who has Akram Moghrabi in support to score the crucial goals.

Watch the match live on the Star Sports Network over five different languages from 8 pm onwards.
