Banerjee hopeful of Delhi enjoying a fine run in the Super Cup

Delhi Dynamos will take on Quess East Bengal as part of the third pre-quarter final of the Hero Super Cup 2019 on Saturday. The Lions come into this encounter on the back of a disappointing season in the Hero Indian Super League (Hero ISL) where they finished in eight position, while East Bengal narrowly missed out on the Hero I-League title, finishing second to Chennai City FC.

At the pre-match press conference, assistant coach of Delhi Dynamos Mridul Banerjee and player Pradeep Mohanraj were present to take questions from the media. Banerjee began by talking about the importance his side have given to the tournament. “From 8th of march we have been practicing for the Super Cup. We are thinking about this step by step.”

Mohanraj also shared his thoughts on the upcoming tie by saying, “The Super Cup is a knockout match, so it is do or-die situation. So, we have to first concentrate on the match against East Bengal.”

Delhi might consider themselves to have a slight advantage given Banerjee’s experience with the Kolkata-based side.  “East Bengal is a very good side. Before the first edition of the Super Cup, I was the coach of East Bengal. So according to that, we have practiced, and we prepared ourselves to meet them tomorrow.”

Given Delhi’s poor campaign, Banerjee was hopeful of a strong run in the cup competition to salvage some pride for the club. “We have a very good combination of local Indian and foreign players. But we were quite unfortunate. We created so many goal-scoring chances, but we were not able to convert it into goals.  That was our problem. We worked a lot on that problem under the able guidance of our chief coach. We hope that with the Super Cup, we will cross that barrier.”
