Cameron Watson: Every Hero Super Cup game is like a final

After missing out on winning the Hero I-League 2017-18 in the last day of the league, Mohun Bagan will now aim at ending the season on a happy note when they take on Churchill Brothers in Hero Super Cup’s third pre-quarter final on Sunday. Having defeated the Goan outfit in both the home and away fixtures this season, the Kolkata giants will be brimming with confidence when they enter the tie at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar. Ahead of the game, Mohun Bagan’s Cameron Watson spoke to supercup.in regarding the match, the team’s mindset and the competition. Here are the excerpts.

What do you make of the spectacle that is the Hero Super Cup?

It’s important for the club and for us as players to try to get something better out of the season and try to finish on a positive note. It was obviously disappointing to finish just four points off the top of the table in the end, but we did our best to get as close to Minerva Punjab FC as possible. So, this is a stellar opportunity to try and get some silverware for the club.

Since this is a knockout and you get only one shot, do you approach it differently from the league?

You can’t leave anything in the tank. Everyone has to be switched on and concentrate for 90 minutes, or maybe even 120 minutes. You have to treat it like a final, or else you head home. So, every team coming into the Super Cup will have this frame of mind and it’s going to be difficult. No matter where a team finished in its respective competition, I think every team is going to be strong knowing that it is a knockout. So I think it is going to make for some interesting games.

You have played your opponents twice in the Hero I-League already, so do you see yourself going in as favourites?

No. I wasn’t here for the first game against Churchill Brothers which was earlier in the season and the second game which we played against them in Goa was very difficult. They have some good players on their team and are well organised, along with a good coach. The I-League season is behind them and this is a fresh start for them, and for us as well. It could be a very tough game. I don’t think there are favourites in any match-up in this Super Cup.
